Nice read. Don’t know what the investors are angry at.

I like the statement that the mission of the company is the first prioirty, then the business. Money makes services, not the other way round.

Robert Scoble may be the only guy I see who seem to be quite happy with the way Facebook’s going.

I deeply respect Facebook’s philosophy and the way Zuckerberg controls the company. He is focused on making the online social life much better and doesn’t want the money, investors to get in his way. Kudos to him.

If this is accurate, Samsung is on pace to pay Microsoft upwards of $2 billion to use Android this year. That’s Microsoft, not Google.

HTC, which barely made money last quarter after profit fell 57%, may be paying Microsoft around $500 million to use Android this year. That’s Microsoft, not Google.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is paying $1 billion to Nokia each year to ensure they keep using Windows Phone. This is the same Windows Phone operating system that Microsoft charges a fee for OEMs to use. Including Nokia.

Aside from Apple, the entire smartphone ecosystem is quite fucked up.

Windows chief Steven Sinofsky, a year ago talking about designing for Metro (a codename all along, we swear):

Our design goal was clear: no compromises.

He’s technically making the argument as to why Microsoft decided to include the don’t-call-it-Metro component alongside the more traditional desktop component in Windows 8. But isn’t it a little odd that Microsoft is so adamant about “no compromises” (he goes on to say it four more times, with exclamation marks!) and yet, with WIndows RT, it seems to be all about compromises?

For good measure, Sinofsky further down:

Windows 8 brings together all the power and flexibility you have in your PC today with the ability to immerse yourself in a Metro style experience. You don’t have to compromise!

Right. Unless you buy a Surface or any of the other ARM-based tablets. Then you will have to compromise!

I continue to believe this is going to be a giant mindfuck of confusion for consumers.

Wow. Josh Topolsky is mad. And that by itself is fine — he’s clearly passionate about technology, which is great. What’s not fine is the fact that he’s way off-base in his rant. So far off-base that I need to respond.

First and foremost, Topolsky has decided to turn my thoughts on the Galaxy Nexus into full on class warfare between Android and iOS. That is, he twists my comparison of attention to detail into an argument about rich vs. poor people.

If you have to say it, you’ve probably already lost. If you have to shout it, you almost certainly have.

Continuing on:

“We do feel empowered to innovate everywhere and bring our partners with us,” Ballmer said. “We are just not going to leave any — what’s the expression people like to use — We’re not going to leave any stone unturned, so to speak, as we pursue that.”

“What’s the expression people like to use”. This is a weird speech tic Ballmer turns to quite often (and hardly his only one). It almost seems as if he’s using it as a mega billionaire trying to relate to the “common man”, but it comes across as pretty much the opposite. “What’s the expression people like to use” — as opposed to what, donkeys?

It also reminds me of another famous clip of Ballmer speaking. In 2007, when asked about the just-announced iPhone:

“Right now, well let’s take phones for instance. Right now we’re selling millions and millions and millions of phones a year. Apple is selling zero phones a year. In 6 months they’ll have the most expensive phone by far ever on the market place. And… Let’s see — what’s the expression — let’s see how the competition goes.”
